How did ordinary men and women experience World War I? The Great War meant separation, combat, and loss for millions. Yet for others the war offered a chance for social advancement, adventure, and victory. Americans were part of this global story, experiencing the tragedy and triumph of World War I. This lecture discusses home-front mobilization and combat, spanning the experiences of soldiers, women, immigrants, African Americans, families, and ends by discussing how Americans remembered the war in the inter-war period.
