Catesby was a real slave who was owned by Lewis Washington, great grand - nephew of George Washington. Both Lewis Washington and his slaves, including Catesby, were captured in the John Brown Raid at Harper's Ferry in October 1859. Author and historian Bob O'Connor will talk about Catesby's quest for freedom, his enlistment as a blacksmith in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, his capture and stay at Andersonville Prison, and his return to Harpers Ferry to become a teacher at Storer College. O'Connor's presentation is based on his books "Catesby: Eyewitness to the Civil War," "The Return of Catesby," and "The U.S. Colored Troops at Andersonville Prison." Copies of the books will be available for purchase. This Civil War Project program was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of America, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Author and historian Bob O'Connor will provide students with an opportunity to experience what it was like to be a Civil War soldier. He will "drill" the student recruits in the steps necessary to load and fire their muskets and the thought process many soldiers close to their own age must have gone through in the terrible war. In another part of the program, he will discuss Civil War medicine by appointing two Civil War surgeons who will walk through the treatment of four "wounded soldiers." This Civil War 150 Project program was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of America, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Author and historian Bob O'Connor will talk about his book "The Amazing Legacy of James E. Hanger, Civil War Soldier." Hanger, a member of the Churchville Cavalry (Confederate) had his leg mangled and amputated at the battle of Philippi, Virginia (now West Virginia) on June 3, 1861. He was the war's first amputee. He hated his Yankee peg leg, so he used his ingenuity to develop an artificial limb with a joint at the knee and ankle. His "Hanger limbs" were worn by veterans from both sides of the conflict. His company today, Hanger Inc., is in its 153rd year of operation, has over 740 clinics treating over 1 million patients annually and is the country's largest provider of artificial limbs. O'Connor's research took him to the National Medical Museum in Frederick and the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. He also met with company officials and spoke with Hanger's descendants. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. This Civil War 150 Project program was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of America, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
