Holiday Memories Writing Workshop

When: Saturday December 5th, 2009 - 01:30 PM
Where: Buckland Community Room

Writing Instructor Carol Madar facilitates a special workshop. Using the fall and winter holidays as backdrop for inspiration participants will explore a rich variety of creative writing genres: mystery, short story, poetry, children's literature, essay, holiday memories and memoir. Silly or serious, musings or mischievous, chilling or comfort fare, this workshop encourages crafting written pieces that will focus on holiday themes and settings.

New and seasoned writers alike are encouraged to participate in this relaxed and supportive creative environment. Written works might even turn into gifts for family and friends!

Carol Madar has given creative writing instruction in a number of venues throughout CNY for over 20 years.

Participants are encouraged to hang on to any work produced in this workshop as you're invited to read your work and hear the work of other patrons from other library creative workshops at a creative event being planned for Spring of 2010; date TBA.

Learn from a pro a few tips and tricks for successful digital picture taking. Thinking of purchasing a digital camera as a gift this holiday season? Learn some features to look for and more.

Instructor Jeff Berman has been running a technology business, Berman Simplified Technology, and has taught at the OASIS senior center and area libraries for nearly 10 years. He has a certification in Information Systems from Syracuse University.

Painting with Sound

Explore the relationship between music and art in this free program that ties into the Turner to Cezanne exhibit at the Everson
Museum of Art.
Painters Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir expanded the boundaries of pictorial representation with short brush-strokes, a preoccupation with light, and the innovative use of color as they sought to capture the sensation or impression produced by object, person, or landscape. As one critic put it, “they take leave of reality and enter the realms of idealism.”

Similarly, composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel blurred the musical parameters of harmony, rhythm, form, and timbre in order to create an impression. This talk will consider some of the masterworks of musical impressionism, drawing connections between musical sound and painting.

About the Speaker: Amanda Eubanks Winkler is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Art & Music Histories at Syracuse University, specializing in European art music.

Teen Writer's Group

We're still on for the second Tuesday in Jan and Feb, however. Join us for a fun hour and a half on the second Tuesday of Jan & Feb 2010, for writing exercises, reading anything you're working on, and receiving feedback from the workshop leader and your peers. The workshop is led by Carol Youngs, a library staff member and freelance feature writer. Sign up and bring a sample of your writing to each session. See you there!

Rosewell:UFO's

In July 1947, something reportedly crashed in the New Mexico desert. Debris was collected and the Army announced it had captured a 'flying disk.' This story was soon recanted a a mistake, but ever since, hundreds have flocked to Roswell, New Mexico in search of UFO's.
